Music

While music has accompanied banquets since antiquity, it was not until the 16th century that the term Tafelmusik (also “Musik zur Tafel” and “Musique de table”) appears, designating the genre of background music for dining. One of the most famous examples in the genre is the three-volume Musique de table (1733) by Georg Philipp Telemann. In honor of the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death, we feature his music at tonight’s banquet. The four performers are Akiko Tarumoto, violin; Johnny Lee, violin; Gloria Lum, cello; and Arthur Omura, harpsichord.
